History of Zafferana Etnea

The Village also known as La Perla dell’Etna owes its name to the Arabic term “zafaran”, that means yellow  and recalls the color of the autochthonous broom in bloom.

The medieval origins date back to the XII century, with the establishment of a Benedictine monastery in the Valle San Giacomo, around which the first inhabited nucleus develops. The same was probably destroyed by the earthquake of 1693.

We began talking about Zafferana Etnea at the beginning of the 18th century with the settlement of colonial families on the land adjacent to the Cella torrent and the construction of the first church in 1753.

The district was still threatened by the lava flows of 1792 and 1992, reached to the doors of the village, and razed to the ground by the earthquake of 1818.

In 1826 following the Independence of Viagrande the reconstruction and expansion of the municipal territories that ended a few years before the Unification of Italy.
